Dungeon Crawler Carl
by Matt Dinniman · 8 books
Why this series hooks him
Dungeon Crawler Carl starts with the most irresistible premise in modern fantasy: the surface of Earth has been destroyed and replaced with a multi-level dungeon game show broadcast across the galaxy. Humanity is the entertainment. Carl — a regular dude with an attitude problem and his ex-girlfriend's cat — has to survive, level up, and somehow win.
It's funny in a way that doesn't feel forced. Carl's internal monologue is constantly riffing on the absurdity of his situation, the game mechanics, and his deeply unimpressive cat (Princess Donut) who turns out to be terrifyingly powerful. The humor makes the brutal parts hit harder.
How to start
Start with Book 1: Dungeon Crawler Carl. Each book ends on a satisfying arc while escalating the stakes — once he's through book one, the rest is inevitable.
