Why this series hooks him
The Three-Body Problem trilogy is the most intellectually ambitious sci-fi series of the last 20 years. Liu Cixin thinks at civilizational scale — the books grapple with what first contact would actually mean for the long-term survival of species. The Netflix show is a good bridge but compresses a lot.
This isn't an action series. It's a philosophy seminar with spaceships. Recommend it to the guy who watches documentary series about physics and asks big questions.
How to start
The Three-Body Problem (Book 1). The first quarter is grounded in the Chinese Cultural Revolution, which takes some patience. Once the science fiction elements kick in, it escalates relentlessly.
